Associated Press

MONACO (AP) — Igor Andreev of Russia and Italy's Andreas Seppi both advanced to the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters today.

Andreev had three aces in a 6-3, 6-4 win against Simone Bolelli of Italy, and Seppi was leading 7-6 (3) against Olivier Rochus when the Belgian player retired with a lower back problem.

Andreev saved four break points in the first set and broke Bolelli three times overall in the match.

Third-ranked Rafael Nadal of Spain, seeking a sixth straight Monte Carlo title, has a bye into the second round.

Top-ranked Roger Federer is skipping the event, but second-ranked Novak Djokovic — runner-up to Nadal at Monte Carlo last year— and No. 4 Andy Murray are scheduled to play.

The top eight seeded players at Monte Carlo all have byes into the second round.
