Hurricane Neki weakening as it nears marine refuge

Hurricane Neki was slowly weakening yesterday as it approached the Papah�naumoku�kea Marine National Monument, or the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

A hurricane warning remained in effect for the monument from Nihoa Island to Maro Reef. Large swells from the south bringing 25-foot surf were expected.

At 11 p.m. yesterday the hurricane was about 415 miles west of L�hue and 115 miles south-southeast of the French Frigate Shoals. It was moving north-northeast at 9 mph.

Neki was a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 90 mph.
