GLASGOW, Scotland — Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu tweeted Wednesday that he was racially abused by two of his own club's fans after a 4-1 loss to Romanian club Unirea Urziceni in the Champions League.

The 23-year-old American, who is black, has been out of action all season because of knee surgery. He didn't take part in Tuesday's game at Ibrox Park and revealed the incident on his Twitter page.

"Not sure what hurt more: result last nite or being racially abused by couple of r own fans as I'm getting in my car," wrote Edu, who scored two goals in 12 appearances for Rangers last season.

Edu joined Rangers on a five-year contract from MLS club Toronto FC in August 2008 when he was playing for the United States at the Beijing Olympics. He was sidelined after knee surgery in June and missed the Confederations Cup in South Africa, where the Americans lost to Brazil in the final.

Rangers' loss leaves the Scottish champions last in their group and struggling to reach the knockout round.

David Edgar, spokesman for the Rangers Supporters Trust, said the responsible fans should be punished.

"We would absolutely condemn that if that's the case," Edgar said. "These are not Rangers fans and they should be caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."
