SEATTLE — Jake Locker threw for 196 yards and a touchdown and ran for another 94 yards and a score, and Washington posted its first shutout of rival Washington State in 45 years with a 30-0 Apple Cup victory over the Cougars last night.
Washington stopped a two-game losing streak to the Cougars and beat Washington State at home for the first time since 2003.
The Huskies did it with a battering defense that knocked out Washington State quarterbacks on three different occasions and an offense that wore down the Cougars by dominating the second half on the ground.
Locker made just one mistake — a third-quarter interception that gave the Cougars a little life — but otherwise was potent with his arm and feet. He completed 16 of 28 passes, including a 50-yard TD to Jermaine Kearse, and averaged nearly 10 yards on his 10 carries.
He capped the night with a swerving 15-yard TD run with 6:45 left as Washington posted its biggest victory over its rival since a 51-3 blowout in 2000. That was the only Apple Cup in the previous 14 to be decided by more than 10 points.
Chris Polk added 130 yards rushing to become the first Washington freshman to crack 1,000 yards in a season, and his 1-yard TD plunge in the third quarter put the Huskies (4-7, 3-6) ahead by three scores. Erik Folk kicked three field goals for Washington.
Washington State lost to Hawai'i, 38-20, Sept. 20.
UTAH STATE 52, IDAHO 49
Robert Turbin rushed for 124 yards and scored five touchdowns as the visiting Aggies (4-8, 3-5) beat the Vandals (7-5, 4-4).
Turbin rushed for three touchdowns and caught passes for two more. His fifth TD, a 1-yard run after Utah State recovered an Idaho fumble, gave the Aggies a 52-42 lead with 8:46 remaining. Utah State lost to Hawai'i, 49-36, Nov. 7. Idaho beat Hawai'i, 35-23, Oct. 17.
NORTH DAKOTA 17, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 16
Defensive lineman Broc Bellmore disrupted a 43-yard field-goal attempt by Eddie Carmona with 17 seconds remaining as the host Fighting Sioux (6-5) rallied past the Bears (5-7).
The Fighting Sioux, who trailed 16-7 in the third quarter, closed to 16-14 on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Jake Landry to Noah Dombrovski in the third quarter, then took the lead on a 34-yard field goal by Brandon Hellevang with 9:33 remaining. Central Arkansas lost to Hawai'i, 25-20, Sept. 4.
SAN JOSE STATE 13, NEW MEXICO STATE 10
Tyler Cope's 19-yard field goal with 34 seconds remaining helped the host Spartans (2-9, 1-7) beat the Aggies (3-9, 1-6) to send coach Dick Tomey out a winner.
Quarterback Jordan La Secla came off the bench to pass for 154 yards and a touchdown and San Jose's defense recorded a season-high four sacks while handing the Aggies their sixth straight loss. Hawai'i beat New Mexico State, 24-6, Nov. 14, then came back one week later to beat San Jose State, 17-10, in overtime.
UNLV 28, SAN DIEGO STATE 24
Omar Clayton threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Payne with 1:24 to play to cap a 14-point fourth quarter as the host Rebels (5-7, 3-5) rallied past the Aztecs (4-8, 2-6) in the season finale for both Mountain West Conference schools.
Ryan Lindley passed for 336 yards and a touchdown as the Aztecs took a 24-14 lead into the final quarter. UNLV beat Hawai'i, 34-33, Sept. 12.
