Costco Hawaiçi Kai celebrated the finale of its “Miracle Month of May” Miracle Balloon campaign today with food, music and an appearance by Hawaiçi “Champion Child” Devin Otto — yet still needing $150,000 to meet its fundraising goal.
Otto, who was born three and a half months premature and spent three months in intensive care battling a variety of life-threatening infections, was one of 53 young embassadors representing Children’s Miracle Network hospitals around the country to meet with President Barack Obama at the White House last week.
Otto, who is now a healthy and active 9-year-old, received his care from Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, the state’s only pediatric specialty hospital and high-risk maternity center.
Costco’s goal was to raise $200,000 to purchase a portable X-ray machine for the hospital. As of Saturday, the store had collected $50,000 from its members.
