Bob Lastimosa scored on Tyson-Wade Lono's one-out sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the 11th inning yesterday to lift Kailua to a 3-2 victory over Maui in the first round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball Division I State Championships.

The Surfriders, runners-up in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association, improved to 12-4 in regular and postseason play and will face No. 3 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champ Hilo (13-1) in today's 11:30 a.m. quarterfinal at Les Murakami Stadium.

"That was one of the best games I've been a part of as a high school coach," said Kailua coach Corey Ishigo. "If you compare the two teams, we're identical — they played hard, and we played hard. The two teams are so equal, at the end I was just happy to be a part of a game like this."

The winning run ended 5 1/2 tense, scoreless innings after the Maui Interscholastic League runner-up Sabers (11-5) tied it 2-2 in the fifth.

Lastimosa was hit by a 2-1 pitch leading off the bottom of the 11th and advanced to second on Elia Lono's sacrifice bunt. He then stole third, setting up Tyson-Wade Lono's line drive to right.

The right fielder ran and caught it near the foul line, but Lastimosa scored well ahead of the throw.

"I felt confident, because Coach was telling me the situation at the beginning of the inning," said Tyson-Wade Lono, who was 0 for 4 with two groundouts, a pop-up to the catcher and line out to shortstop. "He said if the leadoff guy gets on, we're scoring. And I held that belief. We just had to play with heart."

Maui coach Lee Yonamine said the "little things" made a difference in such a tight game. The Sabers saw a courtesy runner over-run second base and get tagged out in the top of the 11th on a backdoor throw from first after a sacrifice bunt.

"He said he tripped over the base, but I thought he was going in too hard, anyway," Yonamine said. "(Lastimosa) got a big jump (stealing third) ... (the sac fly) might have gone foul, maybe (the right fielder) should have let it drop ... but we had opportunities. We just didn't hit with runners in scoring position.

"That's been the story of our last three games."

The Surfriders took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on Ryan McMonigle's two-run double into the gap in left-center. The Sabers then tied it in the fifth after two-out RBI singles by Tevan Masulit-Davera and Joshua Gascon.

But reliever Alika Ramseyer-Ho came in to record the final out, then tossed five innings of shutout ball with nine strikeouts and only one walk.

"Alika usually doesn't go that long, but I felt he could do it," Ishigo said.
