KIPAHULU
Shuttle service available while Paihi Bridge is being replaced

Shuttle service between Kipahulu and Hana will be available during the three-week closure of Paihi Bridge for construction work.

Global Specialty Contractors is offering the service through the construction area in the mornings and evenings for those who need to travel to and from Hana town and beyond. For more information on the shuttle, call Global Specialty Contractors foreman Jeff Francis at 808-741-8305.

The construction project involves removal of a temporary bridge at Paihi that was erected after the permanent structure was damaged in the October 2006 earthquake. Officials later determined the original bridge could not be repaired and the temporary bridge remained in place until design and engineering work for a permanent replacement was completed, according to the county Department of Public Works.

The road is expected to reopen May 25, although additional closures of three to four hours may be needed for safety reasons, the department said.
