Five unbeaten in junior surfing

The four female surfers on Team Hawai'i went undefeated in the first round of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship contest yesterday.
The first round of the Girls 18 division and second round of the Boys 18 division were run in 4- to 5-foot waves at Salinas, Ecuador.
Hawai'i surfers Leila Hurst, Malia Manuel, Nage Melamed and Alessa Quizon each posted an impressive first-round win.
Manuel had one of the best heats of the day, receiving a two-wave score of 14.84 (out of 20); Hurst had one of the best single waves of the day with an 8.67 (out of 10).
In the Boys 18 division, Kaua'i's Dylan Goodale remained undefeated with a second-round win. However, fellow Hawai'i surfers Tanner Hendrickson, Albee Layer and Kyle Galtes lost their respective second-round heats.
The contest follows a double-elimination format, so Hendrickson, Layer and Galtes will have one more chance in the repechage rounds.
The weeklong contest is considered the world championship for surfers age 18 and younger.

WICHMANN HONORED
University of Hawai'i senior Annett Wichmann yesterday was named the Western Athletic Conference's Track and Field Athlete of the week. Wichmann earned the field award after her record-breaking performance at the Stanford Invitational last week.
The senior from Jena, Germany, earned an NCAA regional qualifying mark in javelin with a throw of 163 feet, 11 inches. The mark was a personal best and UH record, breaking the previous mark, which she held, by more than six feet. It is the fourth-best throw in the nation and the second straight year Wichmann has attained regional standard in javelin.

HPU SWEEPS
Sherise Musquiz pitched a seven-hitter, and Krystal Plunkett batted 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs as Hawai'i Pacific beat Notre Dame de Namur, 6-0, yesterday to sweep a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader at Belmont, Calif.
In the first game, Maile Kim batted 3 for 5 with two homers and six RBIs as No. 11 HPU routed the Argonauts, 20-4.
Kozy Toriano drove in four runs for the Sea Warriors, who scored 10 runs in the second.
Earlier in the day, Toriano, a Kamehameha-Hawai'i alum, was named PacWest Player of the Week after going 8 for 10 last week.
HPU is 27-5 and 15-3. Notre Dame de Namur is 8-23-1 and 0-16.
BYUH LOSES TWO
Grand Canyon's Tracy Lubken batted 4 for 5 with three home runs and eight RBIs yesterday in a 17-7 victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i, completing a PacWest doubleheader sweep at Phoenix.
Grand Canyon took the first game, 9-2.
In the first game, Randi Johns hit two homers and drove in seven runs for Grand Canyon.
The Seasiders' Lauren Fielding batted 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs.
BYU-Hawai'i is 12-24 and 5-13. Grand Canyon is 29-17 and 12-7.
