Starting at first base but keeping his left (pitching) arm warm and ready, Mid-Pacific Institute senior Matt McDaniel went 2 for 3 and tossed 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief yesterday to help the Owls defeat Punahou, 6-1, at Ala Wai Field.

MPI improved to 3-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, tied for first place with 'Iolani (3-0). The four-time defending ILH champ Buffanblu fell to 2-1.

"Of course they're still the team to beat no matter what — they're the five-time state champs," said McDaniel, a 6-foot-3 senior who has signed to play for San Diego State University next season. "They're still a great team and have team chemistry. Coach (Dunn Muramaru) told me I might pitch in relief today, and he told me to throw strikes, because that's what wins games. I'm thankful my defense picked me up."

Punahou took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after Kainoa Crowell was hit by a pitch with one out, advanced to second on another hit batter, to third on Tyler Hanzawa's infield single and scored on Alaka'i Aglipay's sacrifice fly to left.

The Owls tied it in the fourth after Derek Tan singled to left with one out, advanced to second on Nick Tasaka's groundout and to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Wade Tamaru's single to left.

MPI then scored three runs in the fifth, all after two outs. Michael Arakaki and Dane Fujinaka drew one-out walks and advanced with two outs after McDaniel beat out a grounder that ricocheted off the shortstop to the second baseman, whose throw to first was just late.

Tan and Tasaka drew back-to-back walks to bring in two runs, and then another run scored when Tamaru was hit by a pitch.

The Owls added two more runs in the sixth.
