Feel the beat of Shaka Steel at free concerts

Shaka Steel, Brigham Young University Hawai'i's steel drum band, will perform several free concerts this week on Maui.

In addition to a visit to Maui High School, the 20-member band will conduct public concerts at 7 p.m. Thursday at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center in Kahului, 7 p.m. Friday at the Baldwin High School Auditorium, and Saturday at noon at the Lahaina Ocean Arts Festival and at 7 p.m. at the Lahaina LDS Chapel.

Shaka Steel, directed Darren Duerden, performs fast-paced music of the Caribbean and Latin America on steel drums, native instruments of Trinidad also known as "pans." Band members include students from Hawai'i, Indonesia, New Zealand, Japan and the Mainland.
