Read Aloud America Program honors volunteers

By Wanda A. Adams
Assistant features editor

The Read Aloud America Program, familiarly known as "RAP", is honoring those who for more than 10 years have helped organize after-school read-aloud sessions in local schools to promote literacy and family togetherness.

On March 14, the organization plans a celebration and reading by Alan Brennert, author of the novel, "Honolulu" at 6 p.m. at the Waikiki Aquarium. The event honors the volunteers who go to schools to give readings and teachers, principals and others who have supported the program over the years. Reservations are required: 531-1985.

The local Read Aloud America affiliate was founded by concerned dad Jed Gaines of Honolulu, who for some years wrote an Advertiser column promoting reading aloud.
