State park getting new water system

Advertiser Staff

HANA, Maui — Work will begin Monday to replace the potable water system at Wai'anapanapa State Park.

Construction in the park's east section, which contains 12 rental cabins, will take place from Monday through March 3, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The day-use area of the park, including the beach, and the comfort station will remain open during the waterline project, with possible delays in entering or leaving the park because of the construction.

The road to the rental cabins will be closed, but state parks staff and the contractor will try to accommodate park users holding cabin reservations and camping permits.

Permit holders who decide to cancel their reservations will get a full refund, officials said.

No new cabin reservations or camping permits will be issued during the construction.

Work on the park's west section will begin Feb. 23. Improvements include installation of a water system back-flow preventer and replacement of water main laterals that serve the park caretaker's office and residence, a comfort station, outdoor shower and drinking fountains.
