Kokee cabins on agenda for meeting tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

The newly appointed Koke'e State Park Advisory Council will meet at 5 p.m. tomorrow in the Planning Commission Meeting Rooms 2A and 2B, Mo'ikeha Building in Lihu'e, Kaua'i.

The council will: elect officers from among its members and hear updates from state Department of Land and Natural Resources officials on the status of the Koke'e and Waimea Canyon State Parks master plan and environmental impact statement; draft design standards for the historic Koke'e, Halemanu, and Pu'u ka Pele Camp Lots; and park capital improvement projects.

The meeting also will cover the status of new leases for the Koke'e cabins and discussion of the public auction of remaining recreation residences.

Last year, the state gave former lessees the first chance to sign new 20-year leases for use of 94 recreational cabins for a limited number of days per year. Lease-rent amounts range from $2,500 to $8,000 per year, up from the prior amounts of $1,800 to $5,000.

Details about how and when the state will auction any unused cabin leases are still being developed and will be posted on the Division of State Parks Web site (www.hawaiistateparks.org) when final.
