Lectio Divina workshop Jan. 17

 •  Malaysia limits use of 'Allah'

A free "Introductory Lectio Divina" workshop, which teaches the method of Lectio Divina as a way to pray the sacred scriptures, will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. next Saturday at Central Union Church.

The workshop, led by Sharon and Savario Mungo of San Antonio, Texas, will be at the church's women's building, 1660 S. Beretania St. Participants are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch.

ALL BELIEVERS IN PRAYER FOR PEACE

The All Believers Network will hold a peace prayer at 7 p.m. Monday at Unity Church of Hawaii.

The prayer for peace is being made in honor of the victims of global violence, including the Mumbai tragedy and the Middle East.

LEARN TO 'LIVE YOUR DREAMS'

Allou Guthmiller will offer a two-day workshop, "Live Your Dreams," today and tomorrow at Unity Church of Hawaii.

The workshop is from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 2 to 5:30 p.m. tomorrow, and meets in room 204.

CHRISTIAN UNITY SERVICE JAN. 21

An ecumenical worship service to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou St. Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai'i will preach and other Christian leaders will be part of the worship.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity was created to heal the divisions and to promote dialogues among churches. The theme for the 2009 week — "That they may become one in your hand" (Ezekiel 37:15-19) — was selected by a local ecumenical group from South Korea. The first Hawai'i service was held in 2008 at Our Lady of Peace Cathedral.

MACPHERSON GETS 2009 KING AWARD

The Rev. Neal MacPherson will receive the 2009 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peacemaker Award at a celebration and awards ceremony at 7 p.m., Jan. 19 at Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave.

MacPherson was cited for work on social issues, including affordable housing and healthcare, gay rights, the environment and peace.

He has worked with Faith Action for Community Equity, Family Promise, Project Dana and the Interfaith Alliance. He retired from Church of the Crossroads in 2008.

FREE WORKSHOP ON MEDITATION

A free workshop on "Medical and Non-medical Applications of Mindfulness Meditation" will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.

Taught by Dr. Thanh V. Huynh, the workshop focuses on the benefits, foundation and practice of mindfulness.

Huynh is a radiation oncologist who holds faculty appointments with the medical school and the Cancer Research Center of Hawai'i. He has been studying and practicing mindfulness (insight/vipassana) meditation since 1984.
