No. 3 Farrington girls win OIA Red crown

By Ann Miller
Advertiser Staff Writer

Farrington flew toward its first O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball championship since 1991 with perpetual motion, then clinched its title with a final quarter of deliberate brilliance last night, pulling away to beat pesky Roosevelt, 71-50, before some 600 at the McKinley Student Council Gym.

The Rough Riders (11-7), No. 10 in The Advertiser's Top 10, upset the third-ranked Governors (18-1) earlier in the playoffs. That forced Farrington to play seven games in 11 days for its elusive title. The Govs knocked off Roosevelt Thursday to set up last night's winner-take-all final. Despite a roster that is 10 deep, Farrington could not shake the Rough Riders for the first 26 minutes.

"They are a tough team," Governors' coach Caroline Tatupu said. "No matter how many points they are down you can never count them out. They're going to keep jamming until the last second."

Farrington used an 11-5 run in the final 2:21 of the second quarter to go to halftime with a 32-23 advantage. Not coincidentally Mikela Thoemmes, who scored 11 of Roosevelt's first-half points, went to the bench for the final 2:21 with her third foul.

Nine Governors scored in that half, and 10 for the game, with senior Natalie Mata going for 17 points and sophomore Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo adding 15.

Farrington extended its advantage to 46-33 with 2:28 left in the third period, but Roosevelt made one last run.

Tasia Kamakawiwo'ole scored two baskets inside and Nicole Ramirez drained two 3-pointers near the end of the quarter to cut Farrington's advantage to 46-41. The Govs scored the next five points, but after Ramirez and Joshy Noga powered in two straight baskets, Tatupu called time with 6:37 to go.

"We wanted to take care of the ball and go for good percentage shots," Tatupu said. "We just wanted to spread 'em, get our girls to attack the basket and get the easy bucket."

Her team took the words to heart, spreading the court out and calmly picking its moments on offense while suffocating the Rough Riders on defense, holding them scoreless for the next 4 1/2 minutes. Farrington scored 20 of the game's last 25 points.

Roosevelt coach Clint Chikamori had no regrets.

"We are deep enough to play with anybody in the state," he said. "Our girls played hard out there. They're just a tough, scrappy team and I give Farrington credit for what they did tonight. Our girls played an excellent game as well, they played really, really hard."

Thoemmes led Roosevelt with 12 points and Kamakawiwo'ole added 10. The Rough Riders hit just 18 of their 35 free throws, to make the final gap larger than it had to be. Farrington took care of the rest.

"Our first goal was to make the playoffs," Tatupu said, "then to win the OIA, which we did tonight. Now it's the states, sky's the limit."

The state high school championship starts Tuesday.
