Portuguese Day in Park celebrates culture Feb. 22

The Dennis Aguiar Portuguese Day in the Park will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 22 at Gilbert Carvalho Park in Hilo.

The event, sponsored by the Hawai'i Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce, celebrates Portuguese culture. It is named in honor of the former chamber president and American Savings Bank official who died in 2004.

Information on Portuguese immigration to Hawai'i and genealogical histories will be available. The Hawai'i County Band will perform at 11 a.m. and free Portuguese bean soup and fresh bread baked on-site in a traditional stone oven will be served at noon.

Malassadas and other food items and Portuguese crafts will be sold.
