Writing institutes for students start in June

Hawaii news photo - The Honolulu Advertiser

Lois-Ann Yamanaka works with two of her Na'au students — Cyrus Maunakea, left, and his brother Marcus — in 2004. That year, Cyrus, then 7, was one of four winners nationwide in a poetry contest held by Scholastic Instructor magazine and had his work appear in the publication. Marcus, two years younger than Cyrus, has also won first place for his poetry.

Na'au, Lois-Ann Yamanaka's writing enrichment program for young people, will offer institutes for students from grades 1 through 12 in two- and three-week segments this summer, beginning June 8. In each of 15 different thematic areas, students read age-appropriate literature, learn about various writing structures, then turn their imaginations loose on their own writing assignments. Na'au is at Nu'uanu Square, 23 S. Vineyard Blvd., Ste. 201, and the class list and fee schedule ($200 to $325 per session) is available at yamanakanaau.com or by calling 548-6228.
