Teen stole car with baby inside, police say

By Curtis Lum

Police last night arrested a 13- or 14-year-old girl who allegedly stole a car with a 1-month-old baby in the back seat, triggering a two-hour search.

The incident began shortly after 7:30 p.m. when a 1997 black Dodge Stratus was taken near an auto dealership on Beretania Street in Makiki.

Police issued an all-points bulletin after learning that an infant was in the stolen vehicle. Officers scoured the Downtown area for more than two hours before they captured the girl, described as 13 or 14, in the Liliha area, said police spokesman Maj. Frank Fujii.

The baby was unharmed, he said. The girl was booked on a charge of auto theft.

Fujii said the girl and the owner of the car may be related. Fujii also said that the girl may not have known that the baby was in the car when she took it.
