UH water polo team tops UCLA

Kelly Mason scored six goals as the fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team scored an historic 13-12 victory over third-ranked and defending national champion UCLA yesterday in the opening day of the Stanford Invitational at Stanford, Calif.

Dagmar Genee added three goals as the Rainbow Wahine beat the Bruins for the first time in 33 chances and snapped their 43-match winning streak.

Earlier in the day, Ryan Hanson-Swaner scored three goals and Carmen Eggens two as UH beat Team USA, 6-5.


BASKETBALL

HILO SWEEPS DIXIE

Jay DeMaestri had 26 points and 13 rebounds as Hawaii-Hilo beat visiting Dixie State, 96-88, in overtime last night in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game.

DeMaestri scored four points in overtime when the Vulcans (11-8, 4-4) outscored the Red Storm (11-10, 5-3) 11-3.

Jacob Briggs added 14 points and 11 rebounds for Hilo. Dalton Groskreutz led Dixie with 17 points.

Also in the PacWest:

HAWAI'I-HILO 73, DIXIE STATE 70: Sheila Azevedo scored 23 points, including the go-ahead free throw with nine seconds to play, as the Vulcans (9-7, 3-5) edged the Red Storm (12-9, 5-3). Hina Kimitete added 15 points for Hilo, which clinched it on Ashley Kualii's two free throws with four seconds left. Jessie Ingraham had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Dixie.

CHAMINADE 68, GRAND CANYON 65: Joel Smith had 17 points and 10 rebounds as the host Silverswords (11-8, 7-3) edged the Antelopes (10-11, 3-5) at McCabe gym. Jamar Berry added 15 points and Mohamed Tangara added 11 points and 12 rebounds for Chaminade. David Cuen scored 15 points for Grand Canyon.


SOFTBALL

HPU SWEEPS CU

Hawai'i Pacific showed Chaminade little mercy yesterday, sweeping a non-conference softball doubleheader by 10-0 scores at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Krystal Plunkett and Ciera Senas each had three hits in the opener for the Sea Warriors (4-0), who saw their first 11 batters reach base in a nine-run first inning.

Casey Sugihara had three hits and two RBIs in the second game for HPU, which again won in five innings by the 10-run mercy rule. Kelly-Grace Saniatan had two hits for Chaminade (0-4).

HILO 5, BRIGHAM YOUNG-HAWAI'I 0: Amber Waracka pitched a six-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks as the Vulcans (3-1) beat the visiting Seasiders (1-3).

HILO 9, BRIGHAM YOUNG-HAWAI'I 1: Aisha Sueda hit a two-run homer and a three-run shot for the Vulcans. Kahealani Alohikea-Betham homered for BYUH.
