Iolani wins third state Division II football title in a row

‘Iolani got a pair of second-half touchdowns and overcame seven turnovers to win its third consecutive First Hawaiian Bank/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division II Football State Championship, 24-17, over Kauaçi at Aloha Stadium tonight.
The Raiders (12-2) broke a 10-all tie with a 3-yard Ammon Baldomero late in the third quarter and made it a two-score lead on Jarrett Arakawa’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Seali'i Epenesa early in the fourth.
The Raiders’ defense needed just one play to get 'Iolani on the board. Junior defensive back Reid Saito intercepted Trey Shimabukuro on the first play from scrimmage and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown. Andrew Skalman kicked the PAT to make it 7-0.
Kaua'i got a 40-yard field goal by Shea Shimabukuro with 6:36 left in the first quarter, but 'Iolani answered with a 28-yard Skalman field goal to give the Raiders a 10-3 lead.
The teams combined for four turnovers and the next five possessions before Kaua'i tied it at 10 after Trey Shimabukuro’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Jamen Kealoha-Albarado with 4:58 left in the second quarter.
Skalman picked off Trey Shimabukuro on the Red Raiders’ first second-half drive and çIolani recycled the turnover into a 11-play, 91-yard drive that was capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Ammon Baldomero. Skalman’s PAT gave 'Iolani a 17-10 lead with 4:13 to play in the third quarter.
The Raiders added to their lead earlier in the fourth quarter. Jarrett Arakawa threw a 3-yard play-action pass to 6-foot-2, 315-pound defensive lineman Epenesa, who was aligned at tight end, with 8:25 left to highlight a 15-play drive that covered 85 yards.
Kaua'i (10-1) added a late score on an 8-yard TD pass from Trey Shimabukuro to Kealoha-Albarado.
It is 'Iolani’s fourth state title in five years.
