U.S. TEAM WINS, BUT FAILS TO ADVANCE
The United States boys youth national team, with three players from Honolulu on its roster, beat Japan in its final pool play match yesterday but failed to advance in the FIVB Boys Youth (19-under) World Champion-ship at Jesolo, Italy.
In the most competitive pool, the Americans were left out of the top eight after finishing with the lowest point-ratio among the three teams tied with 2-1 records in Group B, Iran and Serbia being the other two. The U.S. had beaten Iran, but was swept by Serbia (another result was reported in Sunday's Advertiser).
Yesterday, opposite Jo-shua Taylor (Ku'ikahi Volleyball Club, Punahou School) amassed 17 points on 16 kills and an ace as the U.S. beat Japan, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22.
Outside hitter Taylor Crabb (Outrigger Canoe Volleyball Club, Punahou) subbed in during all four sets, but did not score. Setter Micah Christenson (Outrigger, Kamehameha Schools), who started the first two matches, did not play.
Takashi Dekita had a match-high 22 points for Japan.
Italy, Iran, Argentina, Russia, Tunisia, Serbia, Spain and India advanced to the second phase of the competition.
