HOW TO HELP

The Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association is collecting contributions to help offset budget cuts at the state’s public schools.

If you want to help, make checks payable to “HHSAA SOS Account,” and send it to HHSAA, P.O. Box 62029, Honolulu, HI 96839.

For information, e-mail info@hhsaa.org or call HHSAA at 587-4495. Contributions also can be made at www.sportshigh.com or First Hawaiian Bank (checks only) for the campaign running through Sept. 30.

The Honolulu Advertiser plans to publish names of donors to the HHSAA’s Save Our Sports fundraising drive. Much like The Advertiser’s annual Christmas Fund, donors’ names and the amounts given will be listed. Anonymous donations will be listed as such.

L&L Drive-Inn will be offering $1 steak plate lunches as well as other giveaways for a limited time Tuesday at its Ke'eaumoku Street store inside Wal-Mart to benefit the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association's "Save Our Sports" (SOS) fundraising program.

Proceeds from this one-day event will be donated to the HHSAA SOS fund, which was created by HHSAA executive director Keith Amemiya to help Hawai'i public high school athletics hit by severe budget cuts.

The steak will be USDA Choice Top Sirloin and the plate lunch will include two scoops of rice and one scoop of macaroni salad. Pepsi drinks also will be 10 cents during the time of the sale.

A total of 1,000 steak plates will be available on a first come, first served basis with one plate and one drink per customer. Special tickets will be given out to account for the 1,000.

The benefit sale will start at 11 a.m. though a store official said they anticipate patrons lining up as early as 5:30 a.m.

However, any patron donating $100 or more will not need to stand in line. Just see Eddie Flores, president of L&L Drive-Inn and L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, or his assistant, Brandon T. Dela Cruz.

"Every steak I sell, I'll lose 3-4 bucks," Flores said. "But hopefully, this will get Keith a lot of press."

Flores also said the first 20 people in line will receive tickets to Ten Feet and the first 300 will receive a $200 off Hawaiian Airlines coupon to the Philippines.

The Honolulu Advertiser has been publishing a weekly list of donors, along with articles on the major contributors and short articles illustrating how funds for athletics are used.

FOODLAND TO MATCH CUSTOMERS' DONATIONS

Foodland Super Market will match donations of its customers starting Monday until Aug. 31 to help the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association's "Save Our Sports" program.

Foodland, Hawai'i's largest locally owned and operated grocery retailer, will match customers' contributions dollar for dollar of any amount up to $249 at checkout stands at any Foodland and Sack N Save stores statewide.

Customers may make a donation with cash, check, debit card or credit card. The amount donated will appear on the customer's receipt. Donations are tax deductible.

After Aug. 31, Foodland will match the total collected from its customers up to $50,000.

"We were saddened to hear about the recent budget cuts to Hawai'i's public schools athletic programs and we want to do what we can to support our schools and community," said Jenai S. Wall, Foodland chairman and CEO.

For information, go to www.sportshigh.com or call 732-0791 (Foodland) or 587-4495.
