Easing of recession lifts stocks despite swine flu, other worries

NEW YORK — The recession is starting to ease. Federal Reserve policymakers said yesterday that the pace of economic decline "appears to be somewhat slower" than in mid-March. Major stock indexes, which had already been up sharply ahead of the announcement on other signs of a stabilizing economy, gained more than 2 percent. Stocks have been unsteady in recent days amid concerns over a potential flu pandemic and the state of banks.
