Tube Notes: 'Parks and Recreation,' 'Harpers Island'

TV critic Mike Hughes offers his picks for television viewing tonight.

TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"PARKS AND RECREATION," 7:30 P.M., NBC.

Last week's debut was a pleasant mix -- often subtle and droll, but with just enough broad laughs to keep us going.

Amy Poehler is perfect as Leslie Knope, who sees her current job (deputy director of a parks program in small-town Indiana) as a step toward political power. Her dream is to turn a vacant lot -- complete with an unfinished excavation -- into a neighborhood park; she's doing it with a ragged bunch of co-workers.

The parks director is an anti-government guy who feels parks should be privatized. One co-worker mostly wants to hit on the woman who complained about the vacant lot.

Then there's the planning director. Leslie feels there's a special connection, because they once had sex; he, alas, had forgotten.

These are neatly off-center people. Similar to "The Office" (from the same producers), this show's quiet and clever approach builds slowly.

Tonight, Leslie tries to organize people in the neighborhood.

TODAY'S MIGHT-SEE

"HARPER'S ISLAND," 9:01 P.M., CBS

Last week, we met the key players in this island wedding. Trish is the rich bride; Henry is the not-rich groom. Abby is his longtime friend; this is her first trip in seven years to the island where he mother and five others were murdered.

Tonight, on the wedding day, Abby meets another person haunted by those murders. Henry tries to make peace with some of the locals. Trish meets an old boyfriend.

And, of course, the murder wave continues. That is expected to go on, one per week, until the show's conclusion July 2.
