HALEAKALA
Weekend trip into crater open to work volunteers

The Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Friends of Haleakala National Park is seeking volunteers to join a three-day service/learning trip into Haleakala Crater beginning Saturday.

Participants will stay in Paliku Cabin and remove non-native plants. Park rangers will accompany the group to share their knowledge of Haleakala's geology, biology and Hawaiian history.

The group will hike in on Keonehe'ehe'e (Sliding Sands) Trail, which starts at the summit visitor center, and come out on Halemau'u Trail (the Switchback). Up to 12 volunteers can be accommodated.

Call 248-7660 or 876-1673 for information and reservations or visit the group's Web site at www.fhnp.org.
