University of Hawai'i goalkeeper Kori Lu was named the Western Athletic Conference Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

Lu led the Rainbow Wahine to the biggest win in program history, a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 20 UC Santa Barbara Sunday, and a shutout tie against Montana on Thursday.

She had seven saves against UCSB and five against Montana.

She is the school's all-time leader in wins by a goalkeeper, minutes played in goal, matches played and started, as well as solo shutouts.

BYUH WINS IN ARIZONA

Emily Mearns had two goals and three assists, and Natasha Aiono added two goals to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i over Northwest Nazarene, 5-2, yesterday in nonconference Division II women's soccer at Phoenix.

Stefanie Wright added a goal for the Seasiders (4-1). BYUH out-shot the Crusaders, 17-11.

Stacey Beckman and Kendra Courcy scored one goal apiece for the Crusaders (1-7-1).


WINTER BASEBALL

SEASON STARTS SATURDAY

Hawaii Winter Baseball will open its eighth season Saturday with two games.

The Waikiki BeachBoys will host the Honolulu Sharks at Les Murakami Stadium while the West Oahu CaneFires will host the North Shore Honu at Hans L'Orange Park. Both games start at 7 p.m.

Admission is $6 adults, $4 senior citizens, $4 military and students, $3 for children age 5-12 and free for age 4 or younger.

Five 2008 first-round picks are scheduled to play in the league.

They are: Buster Posey (San Francisco Giants, No. 5 overall, catcher, Waikiki BeachBoys); Yonder Alonso (Cincinnati Reds, No. 7 overall, first base, Waikiki BeachBoys); Jason Castro (Houston Astros, No. 10 overall, catcher, North Shore Honu); Reese Havens (New York Mets, No. 22 overall, shortstop/outfield, Honolulu Sharks); and Jeremy Bleich (New York Yankees, No. 44 overall, left-handed pitcher, Waikiki BeachBoys).
