MLB: Astros donate $1 million to Ike relief efforts

Associated Press

HOUSTON — The Houston Astros will donate $1 million to help with Hurricane Ike relief efforts.

Astros owner Drayton McLane, the Astros in Action Foundation and Houston players and staff will donate the funds to the Greater Houston Community Foundation to benefit a hurricane relief fund that was established by Houston mayor Bill White.

"Hurricane Ike has had a devastating impact on a significant area of the Houston community and the Gulf Coast region," McLane said in a news release Wednesday. "We care deeply about our fans and our community. One of our missions at the Astros has always been to make a positive difference in the community, and we hope that this donation will assist in what will be a very difficult and lengthy recovery process."

Hurricane Ike and its remnants are blamed for more than 50 deaths, including 17 in Texas.
