The Hawai'i-Hilo women's soccer team sent notice to the rest of the conference with a 3-0 debut in Pacific West Conference play last week.

The Vulcans outscored Chaminade and defending champion BYUH by a combined 13-1 in the three games.

Led by junior Megan Pachecano and senior Adele Letro, UH-Hilo beat the Silverswords, 5-0 and 4-0, Wednesday and Thursday, then turned away the Seasiders, 4-1, on Saturday.

Pachecano scored two goals, including the game winner, and added an assist in the win over BYUH. She also had a goal and an assist in the second game against Chaminade.

Letro scored twice, including the game winner, and added an assist in the first game against the Silverswords.

FAKA'OSI HONORED

BYUH outside hitter Losaline Faka'osi continues to impress with her prodigious hitting and overall skills. The freshman from Salt Lake City won her second PacWest volleyball player of the week award after tallying 27 kills (.317 hitting), three aces and two block assists in a pair of sweeps over Notre Dame de Namur last week.

Faka'osi got plenty of help from teammates LeeAnn Mapu, who averaged 10.5 assists and 3.5 digs, and Faylynn Merrick, who nailed 16 kills with just four errors.

MALLEY, TOO

HPU freshman Dany Malley earned PacWest men's cross country runner of the week honors after placing fourth overall — and first among Division II runners — at the Hawai'i Pacific Invitational on Saturday.

Malley finished the 8-kilometer race in 28 minutes and 24 seconds to lead the Sea Warriors to second place. Division I Xavier won the six-team meet.

WHITFORD MAKES IT FOUR

And now for something completely ... redundant.

BYUH senior Amanda Whitford garnered yet another PacWest women's cross country runner of the week recognition after leading the Seasiders to a No. 2 finish at the Hawai'i Pacific Invitational.

Whitford placed second overall in the 5-kilometer race, finishing in 19 minutes and 11 seconds.

Unattached runner Chantelle Wilder won in 19:04. Division I Xavier won the overall meet.

Whitford has been recognized with four of the six runner of the week awards given this season.

HPU STAYS IN HUNT

The Sea Warriors' men's soccer team stayed within a half-game of conference leaders Notre Dame de Namur and Grand Canyon with back-to-back shutouts against BYUH and Chaminade last week.

Senior midfielder Andre Whitt provided all the offense HPU needed in the 2-0 win over the Seasiders. Junior goal keeper Matt Terry registered three saves.

Junior midfielder Max Anton scored the first goal and freshman Matt Johnson registered five saves as HPU won handily over Chaminade, 4-0, on Sunday. Senior Austin Gibbons added a goal and an assist in the game.

MIDFIELDER IS TOPS

BYUH junior midfielder Adam Maciejewski is the PacWest men's soccer player of the week after scoring both goals in a 2-2 tie with UH-Hilo.

Maciejewski scored off an assist from Bryan Neal at the 3:59 mark of the first half, then added another goal off passes from Neal and Zack Kampf in the 39th minute.

The Vulcans battled back to tie the match in the second half, but BYUH goal keeper Doug Hansen made four of his game-high seven saves — three in succession from close range and another off a penalty kick — in the first overtime to help preserve the tie.

The PacWest may lack the geographical and financial reach of the Western Athletic Conference, but the high-achieving nine-team conference can lay claim to superior power of the press with the debut of PacWest Magazine.
