Few upsets this week, except for Texas Tech

By Ralph D. Russo
Associated Press

Who's next to be upset?

The last week of the first month of the season dramatically changed the direction of the national championship chase.

The first week of the second month has several highly ranked teams going on the road or facing tough conference foes — or both. And as Southern California, Florida, Georgia and Wisconsin can attest, being the favorite doesn't mean much after kickoff.

Alabama, which provided one of the most surprising results last week by pounding Georgia, gets undefeated Kentucky in Tuscaloosa. The Wildcats have played stingy defense, but against sketchy competition.

All four top-10 Big 12 teams hit the road to start conference play. Top-ranked Oklahoma should be OK at Baylor — that would be an upset to rival Stanford beating USC last season. But Missouri is at Nebraska, Texas visits Colorado and Texas Tech gets its first taste of real competition at Kansas State.

Unbeaten Penn State takes its potent offense to Purdue.

Oregon State goes for another Thursday night surprise, this time at Utah. Tonight's other matchup has Pittsburgh trying to knock South Florida from the unbeatens.
