Meals aplenty offered today to those in need

Advertiser Staff

Nonprofit groups, businesses, military units and other organizations are reaching into their pockets to provide meals today to homeless and others to mark the Thanksgiving holiday. They also are raising money to stock food bank shelves.

Some of the highlights:

• Navy sailors, employees and family members are joining with the Waialua Community Association to offer a community meal at the Waialua Community Center in Hale'iwa from 10 a.m. to noon.

• Lanakila Meals on Wheels is joining with numerous volunteers to prepare and deliver holiday meals to about 800 homebound seniors on O'ahu.

• Our Lady of Kea'au in Wai'anae is offering turkey meals to homeless residents in the area. The residents received invitations to today's event when Our Lady of Kea'au volunteers delivered food to homeless at Kea'au Beach Park yesterday.

• The Salvation Army's annual Thanksgiving Dinner at Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall features entertainment by Frank DeLima, Henry Kapono and the Honolulu Boy Choir. The festivities begin at 9:30 a.m.

• Hawai'i Medical Service Association employees donated nearly $17,000 and about 3,800 pounds of canned foods and other nonperishable items to the Hawai'i Foodbank.

• Starwood Hotels & Resorts is conducting an online auction through Nov. 30 of discounted room packages, with 20 percent of the proceeds going to Hawai'i food banks. Winning bidders must show proof of Hawai'i residency. Starwood hopes to raise $40,000 for the food banks.
