Snyder returning to Kansas State

Associated Press

Former Kansas State coach Bill Snyder has told school officials that he will return to coach the Wildcats.

A person with knowledge of the hiring told The Associated Press that the 69-year-old Snyder would be introduced at a news conference today. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made.

Snyder retired three years ago after turning around the football program at Kansas State in what's been called "the Miracle in Manhattan." He left with a 136-68-1 record.

Ron Prince, who replaced Snyder after the 2005 season, was fired with three games left but finished out this season. He was 17-20.

NOTES

BCS: The initial news from the BCS standings looked good for Texas. The long-range forecast, however, favors Oklahoma. The Longhorns stayed ahead of the Sooners yesterday and moved into the coveted second spot in the standings, thanks to a better computer rating. The Sooners surged to No. 3 on the strength of a 65-21 victory against Texas Tech, which dropped to seventh. Alabama (.9872) remained on top of the BCS standings, followed by Texas (.9209), Oklahoma (.9125), Florida (.8755) and Southern California (.7974).

San Diego State: Chuck Long was fired as head coach yesterday after the Aztecs finished the season 2-10, the school's first 10-loss season. Hired in December 2005 with no previous head coaching experience, Long was 9-27 in three seasons. Long is owed approximately $1.4 million on the remaining two years of his contract. School president Stephen Weber praised Long for improving the football program's academics, but said "we also need to win football games and do better every year than we have in the past."

Wyoming: Head coach Joe Glenn was fired yesterday, a day after the Cowboys finished their fourth losing season in his six years at the school. Glenn's teams went 30-41 overall and 15-31 in the Mountain West Conference, including 4-8 and 1-7 this season. The school said it will pay Glenn $316,000 for the remaining two years of his contract.

Penn State: Head coach Joe Paterno had successful hip replacement surgery yesterday, a day after the Nittany Lions clinched the Big Ten title and a trip to the Rose Bowl. The 81-year-old coach was expected to get back on his feet today following the procedure at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pa., the team said in a statement. Paterno suffered his injury while demonstrating an onside kick two days before the season opener.
