A teenager was indicted today with allegedly using a baseball bat and golf club to beat a man in Kalihi.

The three-count indictment accuses Shaw M. Awber, 18, also known as Shaw Mohammad Awber, of two counts of second-degree assault stemming from separate attacks on Alika Brackeen on Dec. 3, 2007. Awber is also charged with first-degree criminal property damage.

He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail at the O'ahu Community Correctional Center.

Awber was also charged last week with attempted first-degree murder, three counts of attempted second-degree murder, carrying or use of a firearm in commission of a separate felony and place to keep firearm offense. Those charges are connected to the June 29 North Nimitz Highway shooting in which 10 shots were allegedly fired at 11 young people in a pickup truck. Bail is that case is $200,000.

Awber, who turned 18 last month, was waived by Family Court, clearing the way for him to be charged as an adult in both cases.

The assaults are possibly connected to a police complaint filed by a Kalihi man against Awber last year for attempting to steal his 1993 Honda Civic.

On Dec. 3 at 4 a.m., Brackeen and another man were sleeping in the Honda, owned by an acquaintance, parked at 1519 Kaumuali'i St. where they were confronted by five males with baseball bats and batons. The suspects damaged the vehicle and Brackeen was repeatedly struck on the arm and leg with a baseball bat.

The owner of the car, hearing cries for help, came out of his apartment and allegedly saw Awber, the only suspect who did not have his face masked.

At about 9 p.m. the same day, Brackeen and another man were allegedly attacked by Awber and two companions — identified in court documents as Nicholas Kyle Nichols and Martin Akira Dixon — while walking on McNeil Street near Dillingham Boulevard. Awber allegedly struck Brackeen from behind with a golf club.

If convicted, prosecutors will seek extended sentencing for Awber as a multiple felony offender who poses a danger to public safety.
