Lingle, Aiona issue Veterans Day proclamation

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle and Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona Jr. have released the following Veterans Day proclamation:

Veterans Day is a time to remember and pay tribute to the brave men and women of the U.S. armed forces who served in previous wars, who are serving today and who have made the ultimate sacrifice before having the chance to become honored veterans.

Every day our Hawai'i-based troops serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world make sacrifices so that the same principles of liberty we enjoy are spread throughout the world. Whether Hawai'i-born or stationed here from the mainland, these soldiers, sailors and troops are part of our island 'ohana and share in our aloha spirit.

On Nov. 11 of each year, we reaffirm our commitment to those who have answered the call of duty on behalf of all Americans. Enduring great personal sacrifices, these men and women and their families need the support of our entire community. We are deeply thankful for the veterans who served our country with great honor in the past, and to those who uphold their duties today.

The price of freedom is paid for by the courage of those who are willing to fight for what they believe in. We owe a debt of gratitude to these heroes who serve valiantly on the battlefield and protect our country at home. The greatness of America is found in the bravery and heroism of men and women who stand strong in the face of oppression and conflict. They ignite the enduring spirit of our nation and strengthen the unity of the American people with their resolve for freedom, justice and democracy.

Therefore, I, Linda Lingle, governor, and I, James R. "Duke" Aiona Jr., lieutenant governor of the state of Hawai'i, do hereby proclaim Nov. 11, 2008, as Veterans Day in Hawai'i and call on all the citizens of our Aloha State to recognize the sacrifices of the brave men and women of the United States armed forces.
