Pancho Sullivan won the Xcel Pro men's surfing contest for a record fourth time today.

The final day of the contest was run in picturesque 6- to 10-foot waves (with wave-face heights ranging from 12 to 20 feet) at Sunset Beach.

Sullivan, who grew up surfing at Sunset Beach, was in near-perfect form in the 30-minute final. He received scores of 9.77 (out of 10) and 8.67 for his two best waves.

He earned $10,000 for the victory.

Kamalei Alexander of Kaua'i placed a close second, finishing with a two-wave total of 17.7.

Danny Fuller of Kaua'i was third, and Makuakai Rothman of Sunset Beach was fourth.

The Xcel Pro, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is considered the kickoff event for the famous North Shore surfing season.

Sullivan is the only surfer to win it four times. His other victories came in 1998, 2000 and 2003.

The North Shore season will continue next week with the start of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. The Reef Hawaiian Pro — the first contest in the Triple Crown series — is scheduled to run Nov. 12 to 23 at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach.
