Weather: Sunny this morning, showers later on

Winds over the islands will be on the light side today, the National Weather Service said.

Land breezes this morning will give way to sea breezes by this afternoon, forecasters said.

After a sunny morning, clouds and a few showers will form over the islands again this afternoon.

Trade winds will begin to increase as early as tonight, and steadily build into the weekend, with winds becoming rather strong by Sunday. The breezy trades will then continue into next week.

With the returning trade winds, clouds and showers will favor windward areas. The atmosphere will be quite stable through the period, and significant rainfall is not likely.

Here's a closer look at what to expect heading into the weekend:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. North wind 9 to 14 mph becoming south.

Tonight: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 70. East wind between 11 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Friday: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a high near 83. East wind between 14 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
