Soero advances in PGA Tour qualifying

University of Hawai'i alum Pierre-Henri Soero rocketed up the leaderboard with a final-round 7-under 65 at Palm City, Fla., yesterday to finish in a tie for 12th and advance to the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School.
Soero, who started the day in tie for 30th, finished with a four-round total of 3-under 281 at the Martin Downs Country Club. The top 24 finishers earned berths in the next stage later this month.
Three other golfers with Hawai'i ties failed to advance. Casey Watabu shot 70—282 to tie for 30th and Jim Seki shot 75—285 to tie for 45th at Hollister, Calif. Matt Kodama shot 72—294 to tie for 33rd at Santee, Calif.

HPU KEEPS LEAD
The host Hawai'i Pacific men's team clung to the Pacific West Conference lead after battling second-place Notre Dame de Namur to a 2-2 tie after two overtimes yesterday at Atherton Field.
Chance Bukoski and Linus Ekden scored goals in the first half for the Sea Warriors, who are 9-5-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the PacWest with two conference matches to play.
Mark Bennett scored two second-half goals for the Argonauts, who are 11-3-3 and 6-1-2.
Bukoski took a nice pass from Andre Whitt and scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 23:47 mark.
Later in the half, HPU was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. Ekden then wrapped the kick around the right side of the wall just inside the far post to make it 2-0.
A hard foul in the 65th minute drew a red card on HPU, which then played the rest of the match with 10 players. Bennett capitalized, scoring in the 68th and 71st minutes, but the Sea Warriors responded and held the Argos scoreless the rest of the way.
In the women's match, Sally Olsson scored in the 49th minute as Notre Dame de Namur (9-8, 6-3) pulled out a 1-0 victory over HPU (4-13, 2-8).
The defensive matchup resulted in only eight shots — four by each team.
Elsewhere in the PacWest:
The Rebels outshot the Silverswords 30-3, including 19-1 on goal, with Chaminade goalie Marissa Minor making 17 saves.
Matt Muntz made five saves for the Silverswords.
The Antelopes outshot the Vulcans 10-8, but Hilo had six shots on goal to GCU's three.

UH BEATS BOISE
Chelsea Deptula scored on a 6-yard header in the 73rd minute as the University of Hawai'i beat Boise State, 2-1, Friday in a Western Athletic Conference match at Boise, Idaho.
Mari Punzal scored in the 13th minute for the Rainbow Wahine (7-6-4, 3-2-1), who close the regular season today at Idaho.
Randi Baker scored for the Broncos (9-7-2, 2-3-1).

UHH RALLIES BY HPU
Josimara Pinheiro had 22 kills and 14 digs as host Hawai'i-Hilo rallied past Hawai'i Pacific, 12-25, 15-25, 25-14, 25-23, 15-8, last night in a Pacific West Conference match.
Fabiane Seben added 16 kills and Laura Rodriguez 17 digs for the Vulcans (20-7, 9-4).
"Thank goodness whenever push comes to shove they were able to (make better passes) and we were able to run an effective offense when we had to," Hilo coach Bruce Atkinson said.
Kelly Balanay had 14 kills, Antje Buskies 12 and Natasha Bell 10 for the Sea Warriors (10-13, 6-6), who also got 21 digs from Tricia Yoshimura.
BYUH WINS 13TH IN ROW
Agnes Tuilevuka had 15 kills as Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept visiting Academy of Art (Calif.), 25-20, 25-17, 25-19, last night in a non-conference match at Cannon Activities Center.
Losaline Faka'osi added 12 kills, Melanie Manutai had 17 digs and LeeAnn Mapu contributed 41 assists for the Seasiders (16-5), who won their 13th match in a row.
Dan Yang had 11 kills for the Urban Knights (16-10), who will play as a full Pacific West Conference member next year.
CROSS COUNTRY
UH EIGHTH IN WAC
The University of Hawai'i women's team finished eighth at the Western Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships yesterday in Las Cruces, N.M.
The Rainbow Wahine scored 231 points. Utah State finished first in the nine-team field with 69 points, followed by Idaho with 66 and Nevada with 70.
Idaho's Allix Lee-Painter won the 5K race in 18 minutes, 0.20 seconds. Tava Tedesco was UH's top runner, finishing 40th in 20:12.10.
SURFING
PATACCHIA ADVANCES
Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore advanced to the fourth round of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro yesterday at Imbituba, Brazil.
The third round was run in 1- to 3-foot waves.
Patacchia defeated Brazil's Hizunome Bettero, 15.5-9.6, in the third round. Patacchia took control of the heat midway through when he received a score of 8.5 (out of 10).
Roy Powers of Kaua'i was eliminated in the third round by Brazil's Heitor Alves.
The contest is the 10th of 11 stops on the 2008 World Championship Tour.
