WAIEHU
Prison escapee arrested at beach park campsite

State sheriff's deputies assisted by Maui police yesterday arrested escapee Gary Stephen Arrojo at Waiehu Beach Park.

Arrojo, 45, escaped from Maui Community Correctional Center at 7:12 p.m. Sunday. He was being held at the facility in lieu of $5,000 bail while awaiting trial for felony shoplifting.

State Public Safety spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy said Arrojo was captured after a chase at 3:20 p.m. He had apparently set up a campsite at the beach park, Kim McCoy said.

At about 2:15 p.m., sheriff's deputies had been questioning a man and woman suspected of assisting Arrojo. The woman was arrested on outstanding warrants, while the man is facing charges for hindering prosecution.
