The sport of outrigger canoe paddling continues to grow.

Pukana O Ke Kai will be the newest canoe club in the popular regatta mix this season.

Pukana O Ke Kai, which is based at Ke'ehi Lagoon, gained membership into the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a organization this year.

The Hui Wa'a regatta season starts May 25.

"We have about 60 members right now, and we hope to get more as the season goes along," head coach Lei Endo said. "My husband (Edwin) and I were part of other clubs before and we finally said, 'Let's try to start one on our own.' "

Pukana O Ke Kai will be one of 17 clubs in the Hui Wa'a organization this season.

The O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association will also feature 17 clubs this season. The OHCRA season is scheduled to start June 1.

The two O'ahu organizations are expected to see around 5,000 paddlers participating in the summer regattas this year.
