KANSAS CITY, Mo. — So was this the best game Ervin Santana ever threw?

"So far," said the Los Angeles Angels' unbeaten right-hander, a sly smile spreading across his face.

In his first complete game since the night he got his first major league victory in 2005, Santana (6-0) allowed four hits and no walks and struck out nine in a masterful 4-0 victory last night over Kansas City.

Garret Anderson and Brandon Wood hit consecutive homers in a four-run ninth for the Angels, who now have a claim to pitching fame to go along with the 21 wins that tie them with Boston for the most in the AL.

Santana joined teammate Joe Saunders at 6-0, becoming the third and fourth Angels pitchers to open a season 6-0 or better. Since 1920, Saunders and Santana are just the eighth pair of teammates to start 6-0.

It's a startling difference from last year for Santana, who was just 7-14 in 2007.

"He got a little frustrated last year because he was going out there at times without the tools he needed to do what he's doing now," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "He needed to work on his delivery and get back into his game. When he's out there on the mound and he has his mechanics together, it's a great combination. He got a little frustrated last year."

It was the second career complete game for Santana and his first since hurling a five-hitter against the White Sox on May 23, 2005, for his first major league win.

Erick Aybar tripled into the right-center field gap leading off the ninth off Ramon Ramirez (0-1). With one out, left-hander Jimmy Gobble came in to face lefty Casey Kotchman, who hit the first pitch into center for a run-scoring single.

With two out, Anderson homered off Joel Peralta and then Wood followed with his home run.

Royals starter Brett Tomko went seven shutout innings in his best outing of the year. The left-hander, who entered the game 1-3 with a 6.26 ERA, allowed only two hits and two walks and struck out seven before giving way to Ramirez starting the eighth. Tomko allowed only one runner as far as second and struck out the side in the third inning on just 13 pitches.

Red Sox 6, Tigers 3: Mike Lowell hit one of Boston's three homers for his first RBIs this season, and the visiting Red Sox beat Detroit behind a wild Daisuke Matsuzaka. Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz also connected for Boston, which won its fourth straight game and sent the Tigers to their fourth consecutive defeat. Matsuzaka (5-0) won despite walking a career-worst eight batters in five innings, which also tied the major league high for walks this season.

Blue Jays 1, White Sox 0: Dustin McGowan outpitched Javier Vazquez in an entertaining duel, and Matt Stairs homered in the seventh to help host Toronto sweep Chicago. Blue Jays closer B.J. Ryan walked the bases loaded in the ninth inning but got Pablo Ozuna to ground into a 1-2-3 double play to end the game. McGowan (2-2) gave up four hits in 7 1/3 innings. Vazquez (3-3) struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings.

Mariners 7, Rangers 3: Wladimir Balentien and Richie Sexson homered to back starter Jarrod Washburn, and host Seattle beat Texas to end a five-game losing streak. Washburn had a 7-0 lead and had allowed just one hit entering the seventh. He gave up three consecutive hits, then left with tightness in his right calf. Washburn (2-4) beat the Rangers for the first time in three years, a run of 10 starts.

Athletics 2, Orioles 1: Emil Brown singled home the winning run in the 10th inning, and host Oakland beat Baltimore. With two outs, Daric Barton singled against Jim Johnson (0-1), and Frank Thomas followed with a walk to set up Brown's third hit of the game. Joey Devine (3-0) pitched a scoreless 10th for the win.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Reds 5, Cubs 3: Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer deep into the seats in right field, and rookie Johnny Cueto rebounded from two subpar starts, leading host Cincinnati over Chicago. The 22-year-old Cueto (2-3) struck out five in the first two innings. The right-hander gave up three runs and six hits in six innings, striking out eight. In his previous two games, Cueto gave up seven runs in only 8 2/3 innings.

Cardinals 6, Rockies 5: A hustling Albert Pujols scored from second base on a groundout in the ninth inning, lifting visiting St. Louis over Colorado. After a one-out double to right, Pujols took off on contact as Rick Ankiel grounded out to second baseman Jonathan Herrera, who never glanced at Pujols before lofting a throw to Todd Helton at first. Pujols turned on the speed after rounding third and slid just out of the reach of catcher Yorvit Torrealba.

Phillies 11, Diamondbacks 4: Jamie Moyer pitched seven strong innings and had an RBI double as visiting Philadelphia routed Arizona in a matchup of division leaders. Eric Bruntlett had a three-run triple, and Geoff Jenkins and Carlos Ruiz both had three hits as the Phillies managed a season-high 17 hits. Moyer (2-2) allowed two runs and six hits, struck out five and walked none.

Dodgers 5, Mets 1: Rafael Furcal hit a leadoff homer and Blake DeWitt connected for his first home run in the major leagues for host Los Angeles. Matt Kemp also homered, helping the Dodgers win for the ninth time in 10 games. The Dodgers' Chad Billingsley (2-4) allowed a run and five hits in six-plus innings.
