Kauai court offers help to people without lawyers

Advertiser Staff

People who represent themselves in court without lawyers can get information about court forms and procedures at the new Customer Service Center located within the main lobby of the Kaua`i Judiciary Complex. Although they cannot provide legal advice, the Customer Service Center staff will provide court forms, assist with the filing of documents and answer general questions about court procedures.

The Customer Service Center, which began serving the public on March 3, is staffed by personnel from the Legal Documents Branch Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (The hours are subject to change.) The center is equipped with public-access computers, copiers and microfilm reader/copiers.

"The customer service center is part of the judiciary's effort to serve the public. It is our hope that the people of Kaua`i will take advantage of this resource," said Fifth Circuit Chief Judge Randal Valenciano. The intent is to have parties who have questions or require special assistance report to the center before proceeding to the counter to file documents. This will help ensure that everyone receives appropriate help and that document filing occurs efficiently.

The Customer Service Center does not field questions about traffic tickets. Persons with questions about their traffic ticket should report to the traffic windows at the customer service counter.
