An 83-year-old Kailua man was killed today in a head-on collision between a car and van at 49-560 Kamehameha Highway near Kualoa Ranch at 2:52 p.m.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:04 p.m., said Honolulu Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic. The Honolulu medical examiner's office is not releasing the victim's name until his identity is confirmed.
Police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Lorenzo Ridella said the man was driving a southbound 1998 Buick Regal which crossed into the northbound lane and struck a Nissan Quest minivan.
A La'ie woman, 51, who was driving the van, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.
Ridella said speed and/or alcohol do not appear to be factors for the crash.
The death is O'ahu's 10th traffic fatality of 2008 as compared to 20 on this date in 2007. It is also the island's second fatality in as many days.
As of today, 27 people have died in traffic accidents statewide, which is seven less than at this time last year.
