No cause found for woman who died in Hilo cellblock

Advertiser Staff

An autopsy was performed Friday morning on the 47 year-old woman who died Wednesday while in custody of police on the Big Island. Preliminary results of the autopsy, however, did not give conclusive indication about what the exact cause of her death was. The pathologist has deferred this determination pending the outcome of toxicological analysis.

Ann Marie Lewis was found unresponsive within a cell at the Hilo police cellblock at approximately 8:45 in the morning Wednesday. She was taken into custody at 10:53 the previous evening upon her release from the Hilo Medical Center. She was arrested for two outstanding warrants issued for revocation of her probation. The decedent was unable to post $100,000 bail and was placed into a single occupancy cell. Her death has been classified as an unattended death.
