NOTTINGHAM, England —Croatia's Marin Cilic upset second-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 today in the first round of the Nottingham Open, a Wimbledon tune-up tournament.
The match was the second time the pair had met in a week. This time, the outcome was reversed, as Mathieu knocked Cilic out of the Queen's Club tournament in the second round.
"The second set I tried to stay with him and then he gave me a chance," Cilic said. "That gave me confidence and it was probably tough for him to break me and I took my chance."
Defending champion and fourth-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia beat two-time former champion Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden 6-3, 6-4.
In other first-round matches, Julien Benneteau of France defeated Simone Bolelli of Italy 6-1, 6-4, and American Bobby Reynolds beat Nicolas Mahut of France 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
Seventh-seeded Andreas Seppi recovered from a set down to beat Israel's Dudi Sela 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, and Sam Querrey of the United States ousted Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-3, 6-4.
