BALTIMORE — Some of the luminaries of sports broadcasting are in Baltimore to mourn veteran colleague Jim McKay.
During a memorial service at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz called McKay "a modern-day explorer." Nantz added, "He would take us all over the world, introducing us to people and to sport with his usual out-of-breath enthusiasm."
Other speakers included McKay's son, CBS News and Sports president Sean McManus; and former world driving champion and commentator Jackie Stewart. The tributes were followed by a funeral Mass.
McKay died Saturday at 86. He was host of ABC's "Wide World of Sports" for decades. He is remembered by many for his coverage of the kidnapping and killing of Israeli athletes during the 1972 Munich Olympics.
