Companies cited for air pollution violations

The State Department of Health Clean Air Branch has issued Notices of Violations and Orders against Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company, Maui Paving, LLC, and Schnitzer Steel Hawaii Corp. for air pollution permit violations.

The following companies were cited:

1. Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company, for exceeding their permit opacity limit of 20 percent and not installing a pressure a gauge on the venture scrubber as required by their permit. The violations were discovered on Nov. 29, 2007 during an unannounced inspection of the macadamia nut processing facility located at 61-3151 Maluokalani Street, Kawaihae; a penalty of $5,900 has been imposed and the facility has requested a hearing.

2. Maui Paving, LLC., for failing to conduct the 2006 annual source performance test and the annual visible emission test on their 60 TPH portable asphalt concrete plant 26 Ulili Street, Kalamaula Industrial Park, Kaunakakai, Molokai. A penalty of $3,600 has been paid for the violation.

3. Schnitzer Steel Hawaii Corp., for uncontrolled fugitive dust without using reasonable controls on Oct. 24, 2007 at the Kalaeloa Barber's Point Harbor, Pier7. At the time of the investigation, fugitive dust was generated by excavators loading scrap metal onto trucks which are then hauled to a scrap metal recycling facility at 91-056 Hanua Street, Oahu. A penalty of $4,000 has been imposed and the facility has 20 days to contest the Notice of Violation and Order, and if they do, the case is scheduled for a hearing.
