Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office today identified the fisherman who died yesterday after being swept off a ledge and pounded by waves at China Wall in East Honolulu as Alan Yoshihiro Nakamatsu, 58.

An autopsy listed cause and manner of death as asphyxia due to accidental drowning.

Nakamatsu died at Straub Clinic & Hospital at about 12:30 p.m., police said. A male companion told police Nakamatsu was knocked down by a large wave while setting up fishing gear and swept off the ledge by another wave. While in the water, the witness saw a third wave pound him against the rocks, police said.
