A man believed to be in his mid-50s was fatally injured Thursday night after being struck by a station wagon or van while crossing Kamehameha Highway in Kane'ohe.
The Honolulu medical examiner's office yesterday said the victim's identification was still unknown but was expected to be available on Monday.
Police said the man was crossing from west to east in a marked crosswalk about 9:50 p.m. when he was hit by a north-bound blue 1997 Dodge driven by a 46-year-old man, about 25 feet south of Pahia Road
The victim was taken to The Queen's Medical Center and was pronounced dead about 11 p.m.
The accident occurred near Kaneohe Market at 45-1100 Kamehameha Highway and forced the closure of the roadway to traffic.
Police said the driver stopped after hitting the man, and there were no passengers in the vehicle. Police said alcohol was not a factor but that speeding was a probable contributing cause.
No arrests have been made because the accident is being investigated, police said yesterday.
The death was O'ahu's 26th traffic fatality of 2008. It was also the island's ninth pedestrian fatality of the year and second since last Saturday.
