2000 Honda Civic favored by Hawaii thieves

The 2000 Honda Civic is the top choice for Hawai'i car thieves.
Honolulu police Lt. James Strickland says cars high on the list often are those that are easiest to steal.
The 1992 Honda Accord and 1994 Acura Integra rank second and third for Hawaii.
Nationally, the 1995 Honda Civic tops the list, followed by the 1991 Honda Accord, followed by the 1989 Toyota Camry. The only new car among the national top 10 for last year was the 2007 Toyota Corolla.
Police say older Civics have been the most popular for thieves for several years. Strickland says the older models are often more desirable for their parts. He says they also tend to have less effective security systems.
Newer models often have engine mobilizers that will start only with a computer-coded key.
