Kauai to hold special mayoral vacancy election

Advertiser Staff

A special election will be held on Kauai this fall for a new mayor on Kauai.

The new mayor will replace Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste, who recently died.

The special nonpartisan election will be held in conjunction with the County's Primary Election on Sept. 20 and, if a second election is necessary, during the General Election on Nov. 4. The term of office will be for the unexpired two years in the current mayoral term, beginning on Dec. 1 and ending on Dec. 1, 2010.

If any candidate does not receive a majority of votes cast in the Primary Election, then the names of the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes will be placed on the ballot for the General Election.

Nomination papers for the unexpired term of the Office of the Mayor will be available and may be filed through 4:30 p.m. on July 22.

Because this is a special election to fill a vacancy, no signatures are required on nomination papers for candidates filing to run for this office.

Since no signatures are required on nomination papers for this special election and qualified applicants will be deemed candidates once nomination papers are signed and certified, all State campaign spending and State Office of Elections candidate filing requirements must be met and all fees must be paid at the time of filing.

State campaign spending requirements include filing of a notarized affidavit if a candidate is voluntarily agreeing to abide by campaign expenditure limits and electronic filing forms for candidate committees.
