Tennis: California kids advance in USTA 18 Open

Advertiser Staff

WAIPAHU — Top singles seeds Catherine Isip and Steve Johnson of southern California advanced today at the 2008 USTA Boys' & Girls' 18s National Open at the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park Tennis Facility.

Isip of La Habra defeated No. 6 seed, Shoko Okuda of Tenefly, N.J., 6-2, 6-1. She began playing at 8 years old and now at age 16, Isip is ranked No. 8 in the Girls' 16 and No. 14 in the Girls' 18. "My dad got me into tennis," Isip said in a press release. "My brother started playing and I just followed. I played one tournament to see if I could be like my brother. We played satellites together and I started doing well so just kept moving up and this is where I am at right now."

Isip's highest rank was in No. 4 in the Girls' 16s in 2006. "Last year I won two Nationals [Girls' 18s National Open USTA L2 in Lakewood, CA, last June & California Bowl Girls' 18 in Calabasas Park, Calif.

In tomorrow's semifinal Isip plays Kaitlyn Christian of Orange, Calif., and says it will be her biggest challenge this tournament. "Just because we know each other really well," said Isip. "We've known each other since we were 10. We are both 16 now plus we played doubles together so it's going to be harder."

Chistian advanced to the semifinals after defeating No. 13 seed Marivick Mamiit of Los Angeles, 6-2, 6-2.

Johnson continues to dominate the Boys' Singles draw. He advances to the semifinals today after defeating No. 8 seed, Daniel Ngyuen of Oxnard, Calif., 6-4, 6-4. Johnson started playing when he was 2. "My dad gave me a small racket and a beachball and I started hitting."

He has held a national ranking since 12, and now, at 18, he is currently ranked No. 6 in his age division.

Tomorrow, Johnson plays fellow southern California tennis buddy, Walker Keher of Pacific Palisades who advanced by upsetting the No. 4 seed, Cameron Ahari, 6-2, 6-4.

"We are all southern California kids and we see each other every week in tournaments," said Johnson about the caliber of play at their year's event. "I hit with (Keher) much every week, but I have never played against (Keher) in a tournament. It should be a lot of fun."
